My students need a Classic Birch Easy-Access Supply Center, different types of writing and drawing paper, a stapler, bins, sentence strips and a date stamp.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher in a large urban elementary school in northern NJ. I am a fairly new teacher with big dreams and high hopes for my students. A lot of the students that I teach come from economically disadvantaged households. We are fortunate in our district to get some state funding and some grants from local colleges. In the past few years we have received a lot of materials from these resources to use in the classrooms, such as books, center activities, and new math and science programs, though it is never enough to compare to other neighboring districts.
This past year the teachers in our district have been implementing a new writing program called Writer’s Workshop. We have made great improvements in our student’s math and reading abilities over the past several years but writing is an area that has been suffering. While the district is forcing us to implement this new writing program, they have not provided much training or supplies to do so. Most of the teachers have been doing their own research and purchasing their own supplies over the summer in order to begin this program full force in the fall.
I would like to create a writing center for my students which would be “centrally located” in a designated spot in our classroom for them to access their own supplies during our writer’s workshop every day. Part of being a good writer is being able to have access to ample supplies. I would like to offer many different choices of writing paper so that each student can write on a paper that he or she is comfortable using. Unfortunately, our school only purchases very few types of writing paper to last the entire year and the lines are often very big, limiting the amount of writing that some students will do. I would love to be able to facilitate an independence among the students so they can focus solely on their writing content and not have to worry about trying to locate writing supplies if I am busy conferring with another student. I don’t want their writing ideas to get “lost” because instead of writing they are trying to find an extra stapler. I would set this spot up with their writing folders, additional pencils, writing paper, construction paper (for creating storybook covers or backgrounds), stapler, scissors, tape, and glue.
I have had a couple of other projects funded through donorschoose.org and my students are beyond grateful. I always hear them saying how they can’t believe other people will spend their money on them and on our classroom. They are a great bunch of students who truly deserve the best that life has to offer and as their teacher I feel they should be getting just as good of an education as more affluent districts nearby. With your help, these students will be on the path to become amazing writers! I can’t wait for my students to “fall into new writing”.
