Fairy Tale STEM!

Help me give my students several versions of classic fairy tales plus simple electronic parts for our Fairy Tale STEM unit!

My Students

I'm a third, fourth, and fifth grade Special Education teacher in Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school, and over 95% of its students receive free lunch. I teach in a self-contained classroom where all of my students have mild to moderate learning disabilities.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

My Project

In a few short weeks, my students will begin a writing unit where they write their own versions of classic fairy tales with modern-day twists. In order to do that, however, we need a bigger selection of fairy tales in our classroom--that's where you come in! While we have some copies of fairy tales in our classroom library, it is simply not a big enough selection. We need a few extra fairy tales--both classic and fractured versions--to take our writing unit to the next level!

In addition, I am requesting basic circuitry materials--copper tape, batteries, vibrating motors, LED lights, on/off switches, etc.

These materials will be used at the end of May for our final Project-Based Learning Week of the year. My students will use these materials, in addition to a few others we already have, to learn about simple circuits and electricity. The best part? I'm going to tie all of their projects into our fairy tale writing unit! Rapunzel will get a light-up headband to help her manage all of that hair! The Three Little Pigs will install doorbells on their houses so the Big, Bad Wolf can just buzz, instead of blowing down their houses! You get the idea!

Please help my students continue building our "STEM Stories Library", one book at a time! These various fairy tale books and simple circuitry materials will be the end cap on another great year! Thank you for your generosity!
