Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are Pre-K. We are the beginning of it all. We start with separation anxiety and end the school with children ready to hit the road to learning running. We help students grow to become more social independent learners at a cognitively appropriate pace.

We are a Title 1 school located next to government housing in the middle of a big urban center.

Our catchment area is larger than the upper grades, so we have a very diverse Pre-K student body. Our diversity ranges in socioeconomic status, religion, family structure, and race. Our school has the ability to expose the students to the many varied cultural aspects that our city has to offer. We teach through a Museum theme. We teach the basics but take the children beyond the four walls of a classroom to make real connections with what they are learning. We encourage project-based hands-on learning from Pre-K to 8th grade.

My Project

A big part of Pre-K is developing social-emotional skills. They learn how to interact with others in social and the school setting. The books on friendship/bullying/manners will help give them the language they also need to help them during this growth. In Pre-K there is a lot of fine motor and gross motor skill development. The play dough materials and sand for the sand table will help the children in that task. They will use the muscles in their hands and arms to create whatever they may imagine. This will eventually lead to control over a pencil for writing as they get older. The "My Big World" magazine is a great age appropriate resource to support our curriculum. It is child friendly and each child gets to keep a copy, so they feel empowered through their "ownership" of their magazine. We do a very cool unit on Space later in the year and we need the book resources to help support all of our activities.

This class is a brand new addition to our school this year.

The other Pre-K classes have a significant amount of materials that we have received through DonorsChoose.org over the years. This class will be obtaining some of the same materials. They will be able to start at the same level as the children in the other classes. They will have the same advantages. We do not want any student to lose out on learning just because they do not have access to materials.
