This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 10th grade English Language Learners in a rough inner-city neighborhood. Many of my students have only been in the United States for two years and some of those students never received a formal education prior to coming to the United States, as many are from refugee camps throughout the world. These students have a true passion for learning, but many of my students have never even read a novel.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that our school is only three years old, there are few novels available which are on a suitable reading level (or interest level) for my students. Even the library has many empty shelves. I think they would love reading "Fahrenheit 451" and I know they will be able to understand it as we read it in class together.
By purchasing these books for my students, we will be able to inspire them to read independently as we create a love of reading within them. We will also boost their confidence and show them that they are able to read a novel. My students will be the first generation to attend college and by creating this love of learning and by donating these books, they will become college ready. Most of my students want to go to college and become successful so they will be able to help others, but they will not be college ready if they have never read an entire book in their lives.
You will make it possible for my students to develop a passion for learning and a passion for reading which is so important for language learners. They will be able to learn new words and ideas as well as be able to be ready for college in just a few short years. My students are so appreciative of being given the gift of an education. You will be able to help with this process by your donation.
