My Students

The best scientists are the ones with the ability to develop creative questions and experiments, yet science textbooks often present a dry narrative that removes this creative element. How can we help students appreciate the necessity and excitement of creativity in science?

My students embody the idea that learning is a social activity: despite the fact that my students come from almost every conceivable background and life experience, they revel in opportunities to discuss, debate, and create with one another.

As a science teacher with a science research background, I am well aware of the need for a community of peers with whom one can debate ideas and explore the limits of what is possible. Fittingly, our school values collaboration highly for students and teachers: the project-based model for the school demands a high level of interaction between the members of the school community, and we actively seek ways to develop these skills, and those that lead to a creative, flexible, and inquisitive mind. A significant aspect of this is improving students' literacy from multiple perspectives, including science and technology, through collaborative and creative projects that require innovative classroom activities.

My Project

Countless students have watched a science fiction movie like "Minority Report" or "I am Legend", and have experienced the thrill of having a fictional world brought to life by the imagination of someone else. However, few students have read the books on which these movies were based and experienced the intellectual thrill of imagining and discussing the details and implications for themselves. By participating in book groups focused on science fiction novels and short stories, my students will not only develop their literacy skills but also their analytical and collaborative skills by debating difficult questions concerning the relationship between science fiction and science reality. Students will be engaged in planning and leading discussions, creating a reading calendar, and presenting their learning to classmates. Students may even produce their own science fiction videos as a synthesis of the realistic and imaginative components of science fiction literature.

Your support for this project will ensure that my students are exposed to a different way to learn, are empowered as learners, and become motivated for future learning and reading.

They will learn the joy of reading, the curiosity that arises when you read a book and aren't quite sure if it could be true or not, and develop their ability to think beyond the constraints of the way things are. Science in the classroom will once again take on an element of creativity and collaboration!
