My Students
QUICK! What's 9 + 7? Given that you are most likely an adult, I'm sure you were able to answer that question pretty quickly. But ask that question to a second grader, and they will most likely take a while to answer, counting on their fingers to get to 16.
I teach at a small, diverse school in Washington state.
My school is classified as a high-poverty school, with many students on the free or reduced-price lunch program. My classroom of students is always made up of a wide variety of abilities, interests, and challenges. From learning support students, to English language learners, to gifted students, I am here to teach them all and give them the best education!
My Project
Second graders are expected to have mastered the basic addition facts by the end of the school year. As adults, we take for granted that this is an easy skill. . . for US. But second graders have a really difficult time adding numbers quickly. They are only 7 and 8 years old! But with the right tools, I can help them get better and better with their math facts, which will help them excel in our second grade math learning and beyond! That is why I am requesting the following items:
1. A variety of math games that will allow them to practice their addition facts in a fun, engaging way. The Addition Tower of Math, for example, is a Jenga-like game that mixes in addition problems with the fun uncertainty of when the tower of blocks will fall over!
2. Two keyboard cases for the iPad minis we have. These cases will allow my students to use our iPads like a laptop, which will allow them to complete online addition activities.
3.
Four charging stations for our Nooks. Students can use math apps on their Nooks to practice their facts, but keeping the Nooks charged is a challenge. These stations will help!
With your help, we can make sure that my students will learn this difficult, yet vital, mathematics skill. I believe in my students and I hope you do too! Thank you!
