This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are in entering their adolescent years. Many of them face issues concerning a community of inner city violence and school needs to be the "safe" haven. Viewing this film will allow us further exploration as to how al of us play a role in bullying.
Our 5th and 5th grade students attend a dual language school located in the heart of Chicago, a neighborhood known to be a "gateway" community for the past 100 years or more.
98% our our students deal with poverty and receive free or reduced lunch and most come from families where Spanish is the home language. Many of our students have seen one form of gang violence or another. Our school's playground is the only place where parents allow our students to play outside without the fear of violence.
My Project
We believe that there is just one "bully" that resides within the classroom. What we need to understand that this is a huge myth. What this film will better help us explore is that there are multiple roles we all play in being a bully.
My hopes is that our children begin to see how they can look at their own behavior and see how their actions, whether to laugh, tease, or just stand by affects others. I believe this film will help our students see themselves as people who decide to make that change-whether it means choosing not to join in and laugh at someone, saying something to a friend when that friend has crossed the line, or actually speak out against someone who has gotten physically or verbally abusive.
Viewing this film will allow entire group of children heading into our middle school the opportunity to examine the true face of the bully.
Our 5th and 6th graders will have the opportunity to reflect on their own behavior, hold powerful discussions for the rest of the school year and explore how they see themselves as community members. Are they a bully? A supporter of the bully? A victim? A bystander? Or will they become the game changer? Perhaps they have played all 4 roles.
