My students need Chromebooks to take them beyond the walls of our classroom as we study and read about different countries, communities, cultures and immigrant experiences.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing, smart, creative and caring. My students walk into my classroom ready to be engaged in learning and excited for the day. They are eager to explore current world issues, and to expand their knowledge of history. They take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning.
I teach at a Title I school in the Bronx where 100% of my students receive free lunch.
Many of my students are from Latin American, Caribbean, and African immigrant families. They are very tech savvy and love using technology at school when computer carts are available. Based on a survey I conducted, I discovered that the majority of my middle school students do not have access to a computer or WiFi at home.
My Project
I would like to purchase Chromebooks in order to give students access to technology and learning. My students will be using Google Drive and Google Classroom. Students will immerse themselves in the Ellis Island immigrant experience and gain a historical perspective. They will be analyzing primary source texts and identify common themes of immigration, past and present. Students will work with websites and combine observations and background information to work on photographic analysis related to immigration.
The access to Chromebooks in the classroom will be greatly appreciated by many of my students who have no technology at home.
They will be able to take pride and ownership in posting assignments and comments online. Receiving real-time feedback from their teacher will be an effective way to increase their reflection on their learning. They will create projects about the immigrant experience by using technology.
