Facilitating Critical Thinking, One Interactive Notebook At A Time

My Project

Our district is located in a high poverty city. All of our students have access to free lunch under the federal student aid program. Ninth grade is difficult to navigate for students and families. Students are not accustomed to tranisitioning from class to class. They begin to have multiple teachers when they were accustomed to 1, possibly 2. The grading system has higher stakes and if they don't pass a class, they have to repeat. Further, there are very few, if any, supplemental programs or even summer school that are affordable and/or provide academic support and tutoring. In an attempt to support student learning, I'm looking for a methodology to instuct, build skill, assess and have a resource that students may use for the rest of their high school career. Having access to sufficient paper, notebooks, a paper cutter and markers will allow students to build interactive notebooks, build knowledge and foster crititcal thinking step by step.

The goals for this project are:

*Facilitate engaging student activities

*Foster critical thinking

*Improve ELA skills

*Build usable student resources

Our school consists of grades 9-12 and offers majors in music: vocal, orchestra and band, creative writing, theater, dance, and visual art: ceramics, photography, 2D and 3D. Students have to audition, interview and be accepted to attend our school. For the most part, they want to be there. Students want to perform artistically, academically and grow. Students don't often have the opportunity to display their learning and demonstrate their knowledge due to the lack of access to supplies. Creating interactive notebooks will allow students build skills and resources.
