Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in an urban high school where the majority of students live below the poverty line. I have served in this district as a special education teacher for 21 years and happily continue to do so.

Teaching is my passion and my calling, and I could not imagine doing anything else in this world.

My present classroom contains 10 significant intellectually disabled students, ages 16 to 19, of varying functioning levels. Eighty percent of my students are multilingual learners, and ten percent are nonverbal. Due to the differing abilities of my students, preparing them to enter the adult world as independent as they can be is high priority.

My Project

Presently, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we've had to scrap our tables for individual desks. With the current metrics changing and more and more people are getting vaccinated, we should be getting back to a sense of normalcy hopefully by the beginning the the 2021/22 school year.

My hope is to bring new tables back into my classroom to better support students' diverse learning needs and allow for the group work that my student miss so much.

It's been a tough year for my students, and we welcome normalcy with open arms.
