Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is not quiet. It is active, fun and engaging! Every day my class is full of excited students learning through hands-on inquiry based instruction. Students buzz around designing their own projects such as guinea pig mazes, balloon-powered cars, rockets, bouncy eggs, and roller coasters.

My students are the most wonderful individuals on the planet.

Yes, they might have the labels of being 94% economically disadvantaged, 80% Hispanic & 11% African-American, but that's where the labels stop. Every single child that I teach is unique, smart, inquisitive, and awe-inspiring. I love them all. They are why I come to school each and every day with a huge smile on my face. Not only is their enthusiasm and energy contagious, so is their love of learning and sense of humor. They are just delightful. I would go to the moon and back for them if I could. You would too, if you met them. Most don't have wifi at home. Most don't have computers. At my school, we only have one computer lab with approximately 30 computers for over 1,000 students. Needless to say, my students get very limited access to technology at my school, and I want to change that. Daily computer access is a must for my students to be able to compete in the 21st century.

My Project

Imagine someone took away all your technology - your computer, your phone, your tablet. Imagine that you were not allowed to have access to the internet. Imagine that for a day. Now imagine that they took it away for a year or more. What would you do? Where would you get your information? That situation is exactly what my students are in right now. Their parents can't afford internet access, computers, or tablets. Some have phones, but they are prepaid phones with limited data plans. I want to bring my students into the 21st century. I want them to have access to computer technology every single day in my classroom. I want them to be able to research anything they want to learn more about. I have dreams of teaching them how to use the programming languages Scratch and Python. I want them to use Google Docs for group projects, use their textbook online which has a translator for multiple languages (since most of my kids are bilingual), and visit engineering websites like Phet.

My students will be able to be more engaged learners with daily computer access in my classroom.

For them, the internet is an amazing and wonderful tool - not something they take for granted like you and I do. From my perspective, daily computer access is a necessity. It is the key to opening doors to dreams of going to college and creating a better life for themselves. Computers will give them the support they need to grow their self confidence in learning and to help close the education gap.
