Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are bright, energetic middle schoolers. Our school population is made up of students from a low-income community with a high percentage of English Language Learners. In spite of the challenges my students face on a daily basis, they have a desire to explore, to design, and to develop their engineering skills every day.
These are great kids and many, if not most of them, have not had exposure to the career possibilities that are available in engineering, science, and math.
This is only a tiny exposure to the larger world of what can be available to them. Most of them do not have the resources to build projects outside of an engineering lab, therefore within the lab my students are exposed to many more possibilities for their future.
My Project
There is growing recognition that engineering opportunities offers a new way to engage children as active learners -- by inviting them to engineer. Engineering motivates students to learn about science and technology as well as to gain valuable experience developing creative and innovative projects.
In our new engineering lab, my students will see themselves as producers, not just consumers.
They will develop as self-directed learners, a key attribute of 21st Century learners.
Engineering labs not only promote making but also develop an ecosystem that contributes to the economic and cultural life of a community. The storage materials requested will provide an organized area for our students to easily find the appropriate tools needed for their robotics and maker space projects.
