My Students

"Facts are the air of scientists. Without them you can never fly." ~ Linus Pauling. Scholars of science ask why, why, why and they want to find the answer. While I love for my students to discover for themselves the why, often times it is best to find the why from a great book.

I teach sixty fourth graders in an inner-city, urban school district in Alabama.

Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. These children have been identified as gifted and come to me one day a week for gifted services from nine other area schools. Gifted classrooms receive no money for books and materials needed. Our state has been affected by tornadoes, oil spills, and like most of the country, an economic downfall. My district is probably going to be taken over by our state department of education for various reasons. But, because of these factors and in spite of these factors, I am determined that my students have the best for their future.

My Project

My students are so curious. They will not accept my word for what is factual and I applaud that. I want them to discover and learn on their own so that they will be life long learners. In my class, they are not taught at grade level. They are taught above grade level and encouraged to explore their interest. In my student's regular classroom, they are not exposed to very much science. When they walk into my class, they know we are going to be scientist. In order to be scientist, they need accurate and authentic information. My students need 25 DK Eyewitness books focusing on science content. DK Eyewitness books are always the first books to be pulled off my small classroom library shelf. They are distinctive, highly visual books, that inspire the "inner scientist" in my classroom. We need many, many more of them to inspire my students.

We know how crucial scientific literacy is to our society.

But in cash-strapped schools across the country, such as ours, science programs are too often considered a luxury. By supporting our proposal, you will be supporting the "inner scientist" in my students. The need for up-to-date informational materials is so important. Who knows, one of them may be the one to discover a cure for cancer or invent the first flying automobile, or even, find a better, economical way to fuel our automobile.
