Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men," Fredereck Douglass once said. This is exactly what we are trying to accomplish with our students, faced with challenging community and home lives.
We teach in a multicultural, high needs school in New York where 1 in 5 students is still learning English and 1 in 5 students has been classified with a disability.
Over 90% of our students recieve free or reduced lunch. These specific students are third and fourth graders in a very high poverty area. They are diverse in terms of their backgrounds and their needs. When they are given opportunities, they are constantly surprising us and coming up with new and brilliant ideas!
My Project
We are requesting two iPads. Our hope is that the technology available on an iPad gives children access to a world they may not otherwise encounter at home. In addition, we realize the importance of self-identity work for children who are facing adversity.
What we want them to do is to study and analyze the environment around them. It is important for them to see what their community is really all about, and to question the oppression that they've learned to accept.
We hope that through the use of an iPad, children can take literal "snapshots" of their lives, communities, and communities around them.
As teachers, we are in a position to teach our students how to become better citizens, to make a change.
We do not want to be responsible for preventing our students from gaining power. We want to get them ready for their own future and to feel motivated to change their circumstances. We do not want them to reject their community, but rather, recognize and name what they want to change.
