My students need reading incentive prizes for continued reading challenges at home. Prizes include bracelets, key chains, sticky hands, and light-up toys.
My class is full of brilliant 6 year-olds ready to take on the world. They come in with little knowledge, and will come out reading in 2 languages. My first graders are in a Dual Language Spanish/English program.
Approximately 50% of my students come from native Spanish speaking homes, while the other 50% are from native English speaking homes.
Every day, 90% of the instruction is in Spanish. As we strive to learn the target language, we also introduce English into our day. We follow all the standards for the Common Core State Standards, but they learn primarily in Spanish in first grade. About half of my class receives free or reduced-price lunch and could use the extra help in all areas.
My Project
My students are in the GREAT part of the year where they are just beginning to become budding bilingual readers! We are fully into Winter now and what a great time to put on a reading PUSH for more reading at home. In February, I challenge my first graders to surpass their previous reading goal of 20 minutes a day, and up it to 30 minutes a day! With this challenge, every student that reads 30 minutes or more a day in English and Spanish, will be entered in to win a prize for the day. They could possibly win every day! What an exciting way to motivate them to read more and gain more knowledge, when they can choose between a unicorn keychain, a pair of light up glasses or a mini rubrics cube.
At the end of the month-->reading scores WILL go up!
