Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am privileged to teach 1st Grade in the Yonkers Public School System. I have a beautiful class of enthusiastic and receptive students. My school is in a very high need community with over 90% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. We have a strong focus on building literacy and it is my chief goal as a teacher of the foundational level of 1st grade to keep my students motivated so that they will continue be try their best and meet success. How can they succeed if they do not know how to read? We work hard daily to build up reading skills.
Students are asked to read for 20 min at home each night. But my students do not have books or other reading material at home to complete the daily requirement of at least 20 min.
I can alleviate this problem by giving my students interesting supplemental reading that they can take to their home and practice reading daily. Time Magazine for Kids is a wonderful resource that not only has excellent and relevant current event articles for students but the topics are things kids are interested in. I have used them in years past and my students have loved and learned so much from them. However I have not been able to order for the past 2 years due to lack of funds.
Please consider funding the purchase of this excellent resource for my students to help them keep the reading going at home with interesting non-fiction that will introduce them to a world of social studies and science related facts. It will be much appreciated by their teacher as well as themselves. Thank you
