My students need dissection materials - trays, tools and organs to aid in science study of the eye and brain.

My Students
Animal dissections usually start in Jr. High/High school but for 3rd graders at Keyes Charter, they start much sooner. Dissections encourage students in science & biology. KTL students no longer have dissection materials, they were given to the older students when they moved to a new campus.
We are a Central California Charter School with approx.
150 students in K-6. These students attend four days a week and are "home-schooled" one day a week. These are curious students who receive support from home as well as from our teachers. Students are from cities all over Stanislaus County. Our school uses the "Core Knowledge" framework to provide a rich content based curriculum while encouraging culturally literate students. 3rd graders do an in depth study of the skeletal system, the eye (and light), the ear (and sound) and the nervous system (brain). Different human body systems are covered in each grade.
My Project
I am requesting science dissection materials from Nasco. I am needing dissection trays and tools first and foremost. Our school set that was shared, has recently been given to the high schoolers (at a new campus) to use. This past April I had to purchases inadequate dissection materials, just to get by. Many parents commented that my tools were not "doing the job". I am also requesting the preserved materials of cow eyes and sheep brains to aid in the first dissection with our new trays and tools. Even though these tools will remain in my third grade classroom, these trays and tools will be also be used by other K-6 grade levels, when needed. For example, our 4th graders will be doing heart dissections and I know they would very much also using these dissection materials. Many students in many grades will be benefited. It is my goal to have at least one animal dissection at each of the K-6 classrooms within the next few years.
Animal dissections can light a fire of curiosity for the study of biology in our students.
This type of learning experience lessens the "fear" of dissections and takes words read from a page into a real life application. Since we study the content so well, students are able to fully engage in the dissection. This has a broad impact since students for years to come will be able to enjoy the purchase of materials and will insure that dissections at the elementary level will continue.
