Help me give my students what they need to succeed in our classroom! Every day we use HW folders as well as writing tools to annotate in our ELA textbook, to draw and label, and to practice spelling.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The students in our inclusive classroom use these sturdy folders every single day to bring important learning materials, HW sheets, and family communications back and forth, from home to school. They are the best tool we've found to build foundational HW habits and responsibility for our young students. Inside the classroom, we are using annotation skills to support reading comprehension. Highlighters show where text features support claims or ideas about an author's message or central idea. Dry erase markers are essential to our phonics instruction when we use individual white boards, as they provide a way to show letter formation, and spelling accuracy without wasting paper.
We use all the tools in this project throughout the year to support our structured literacy instruction, and our hands-on conceptual learning in math.
These special primary journals allow first graders to draw and write. Drawing a picture is a first step toward writing, and is used as a successful strategy that turns imagination into text. These journals keep their work organized, and students reference it all year long.
The copy paper is used to print out essentials only, such as HW tasks, parent communications, and small group sheets to support understanding. On these sheets, we often color with crayons. Children adore choosing colors, sharing with their table, and creating their unique drawings to share.
