This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember how curious you were about Science and the world around you? My students love to read about science and are always eager for new materials. Scholastic News and Science Spin will allow my students access to not only science topics, but current events as well!
My students live in a high poverty area in Arizona, a state that doesn't fund education in the way it needs to.
Our school is older and doesn't have the resources of the newer schools in our district. I have watched the students from my school donate food and blankets to needy citizens, or give up birthday money to buy something for someone else at Christmas. They are wonderful citizens who I would like to see get something back.
My Project
My students will use Scholastic News and Science Spin to gain exposure to functional text. With new standards in place, students need to become more familiar with non-fiction texts as well as standard literature. Using Scholastic News and Science Spin in small reading groups, will allow my students to learn about not only what is going on in the world around them, but also about science topics. While they are doing this, they will also be learning about and exploring text features (captions, headings, graphs and tables, plus many more). The benefits of using a magazine that they can then keep are endless!
This project will allow my students their own magazine.
Many students don't have a magazine subscription, and this project will allow them to have two! They will not only have access to current events, but also science topics, all at their reading level!! Being able to read the magazines without too much struggle will also help to encourage them as readers!
