My Students
What's a newspaper without pictures? We have started publishing a school newspaper, but the only pictures in it come from the teacher's cellphone! Really, we'd like pictures of the football game, prom, even PTA meetings, if only we had a way of getting them!
We are a small school in a humongous district where resources are low.
My students range between 9th and 12th grade, and most are taking journalism for the first time. I primarily have African American, Caribbean American, and Latin/Spanish American students. My students have an incredible joy of life. They aspire to a number of professions -- doctors, lawyers, politicians, and yes, even a journalist or two. A large portion of students in my school qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I am asking for two digital cameras. With these cameras, my students will be able to document the happenings on their campus, not only for themselves but for the entire student body, as well as parents and the community. Having the cameras will allow the school newspaper to be more realistic. Students will be able to take photographs of school happenings and choose which ones to print. They will learn the value of a photograph to tell a story. They will learn how to take a variety of different pictures (action shot, portrait, etc.). They will learn how images and text are used together in the media to create an overall impression upon the reader.
Donations to this request will help supply my students with the much needed cameras and allow two students to take pictures at the same time.
Broadly speaking, the journalism students should learn to be more critical consumers of media as they gain greater understanding of the inner workings of media.
