The journalism course is open to 9th through 12th graders.
Students are drawn to the course for two reasons: the desire to work independently and the freedom to write about issues of importance to them.
Our school is a large, diverse urban school that houses the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA) and the district's pre-engineering program. The journalism class gives students who are interested in journalistic writing a home.
My class gives students a voice. Students who take the Journalism course are looking to have a different writing experience than what they might have in a traditional English class. Our class focuses on the real-world experiences of responsible expression, communication, meeting deadlines and leading one's peers.
My Project
Our newspaper has recently been revived, thanks to my enthusiastic students in the journalism class. This course not only gives my students an outlet for journalistic writing, but also a place to be heard. With no funding and equipment, they have managed to train themselves in journalistic writing and build an online publication. A GoPro camera, microphones, and a tripod will help my students realize their next goal for our class: broadcast journalism.
Having these digital tools available for my students will encourage them to move their reporting beyond the walls of our school building.
Mastering these tools and working collaboratively to tell stories will provide my students with the opportunity to learn practical and necessary skills important for today's journalists. This equipment will give my students the opportunity to conduct interviews and incorporate the interview material into their stories.
Having access to a GoPro camera and microphones will encourage my students to tell stories in an innovative and powerful way and learn new skills important for growth as digital journalists. Funding this project will help my students continue to develop as writers, reporters, and critical thinkers.
