Help me give my students copies of “One Of Us Is Lying”. This is a novel even reluctant readers will connect with but there is no mommy in our school budget to buy these books for my students.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Getting students to read is a big problem. Literature is a great escape and students benefit from the reading, it opens their minds and lets them identify new insights into their own lives. It also helps them to increase their vocabulary and use decoding skills in other areas of their lives. This novel centers on the mysterious death of a classmate who has a gossip app about secrets each student has. The students have been given after school detention for having their phones on them during the school day. Simon has something on each of them and if the secrets get out it can ruin their lives. Students will be able to relate to the text because it could happen to them. With the popularity of social media and access to the internet, some may find that mistakes they make can be out there forever for all to witness. They will be able to relate to the characters because they’re based off kids they know and see each day in their schools. They may even see themselves in the characters in the book.
