My Project
At my school, 5th grade is departmentalized. There are 3 teachers on the 5th grade team, and we each have a group of homeroom students. We each teach one content area and each homeroom's group of students rotate between the 3 of us each day. Next year, this group of students will be at our corporation's middle school. The way we present 5th grade acts as a transition between elementary and middle school.
I teach in a small, Title I school.
My students are from varied backgrounds, but most of them have lived in the town where the school is for all their life, as have the generations before them. They are energetic, motivated, and inquisitive. They participate in sports and other activities, both in and out of school. Many of my students are part of the school Leadership Team. They all participate in the school Science Fair.
I am the ELA teacher for all of 5th grade. My readers cover a wide range of expertise. Some of my readers already have found a favorite author or genre. Some of my readers still need a little nudge, and I think that some new graphic novels will do the trick. Our school uses the Accelerated Reader program. Students read books and take reading comprehension tests on the books to accumulate points. They set goals for each marking period and earn treats and prizes along the way. As I was choosing my books for this project, I checked if these choices were AR or not. They are all AR - hooray! I want to stock my classroom library with new graphic novels that many students will enjoy.
