FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Besch's classroom raised $472
This project is fully funded
Students in my reading class complete weekly comprehension drills to help increase their reading ability. These drills consist of a short story followed by eight multiple-choice questions. Although the stories range in topics, the students tend to dread this activity because the stories do not interest them. This year I incorporated Weekly Reader as a tool for developing comprehension - this took the place of the comprehension drills we did. The students loved it! I was able to use the magazines to teach reading strategies and skills. This magazine helps develop reading, vocabulary, critical-thinking skills, and encourages participation in classroom activities.
Since doing this, we have been instructed that we can not ask parents for money in order to purchase these magazines. Time for Kids can be used in both reading and social studies. Best of all, children will stay up-to-date with on-going election news!!!!!!!!!
Recently, a nationwide panel of educators also found that Weekly Reader/Scholastic News/Time for Kids is highly effective in meeting the 5 key standards of literacy instruction put forth by the National Reading Panel, which is another reason I would like to utilize it in my classroom next year. This concept works best when each child has their own subscription. That means all students can take part in the activities. The cost of each issue covers a magazine for each child that they will be able to keep. This is important because students can bring their enthusiasm about reading home to share with their parents.
Please know that I feel strongly that this activity will increase reading motivation, comprehension, and an appreciation for current events. This proposal is for a subscription for my students for the 2007-2008 school year.
