This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The Junior Scholastic magazine offers my students non-fiction reading material in an engaging and relevant way. In every issue my students will be exposed to Civics, U.S. History, Geography, and even World History. Information directed specifically to their age group and including the voices of other kids their age that are impacted and involved in these stories and events. My students will be able to make connections between this material, our class curriculum, and their own communities.
Working with non-fiction text is an essential skill for all students, especially in a social studies classroom.
Having Junior Scholastics in our classroom will encourage and enhance our classroom discussions and debates about past and current events. My students will also gain additional practice and support in their historical thinking and writing skills while they interact with the information in various formats including, text, maps, graphs, and more. Working with non-fiction in a variety of formats will help improve my students reading comprehension and their writing.
