My Students
My students come from a diverse range of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds, but they all come to school ready to learn. Their wide range of interests and unique personalities help shape our class community.
My fifth grade students are curious, hardworking scholars who need engaging and relevant texts to motivate them.
During distance learning in the spring, my district and school worked to provide each household with WiFi access and devices; however, the students struggled to gain access to engaging, high-quality texts. I believe all students deserve to have access to rigorous, but fun and interesting education.
My Project
Due to COVID-19, our school will start the new year through 100% distance learning. Scholastic News is implementing a hybrid program with print and digital/online resources, which would allow my students to continue learning at home and when we eventually go back to school. Scholastic News includes non-fiction articles that are thought-provoking and cover a wide range of topics.
A Scholastic News subscription would give my students access to fun, engaging, non-fiction texts and videos at home and in person.
These resources will be used to supplement our curriculum with current events and allow me to differentiate for students at different reading levels. Students will engage with the material as homework and use it as a resource in their writing. Additionally, these articles will be used as evidence to engage in academic discourse and debate about current events that are interesting to them. This will help prepare my students for life in the 21st Century by teaching them to use multimedia sources as evidence to support their claims. A Scholastic News subscription will help me give my students access to a fun, but rigorous education.
