My students face many challenges, the least of which is that 90% of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They are at a disadvantage in their academics. If I want my students to make a difference in their world, I need to first introduce them to their world!
We are a title one school in Florida.
This means that a high percentage of our students come from homes with low or no income. A high percentage of the students in my class are already living in homes that are broken and these students need more from us than the average child. We have great kids - who are at a great disadvantage!
My Project
I am requesting Weekly Reader and Time For Kids along with several newspaper activity books. These tools will allow me to enhance literacy among my students while teaching them current events and real-life. If we want these students to make a difference in their world, they have to know what's going on in it!
This project will make a difference to students because it allows them to have current curriculum.
So much of our curriculum and supplies are "dated" and by using Weekly Reader and Time For Kids, they're getting the chance to boost their reading skills while at the same time learn about current events in their world.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
