Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a wonderful group of first graders in a Title I school in North Philadelphia. While they are excited to come to school and eager to learn, my students are faced with a tremendous amount of adversity. Since we are located in a high crime and high poverty area of Philadelphia, my students and their families are faced with many challenges. It is often difficult for my students to keep up with the high demands of school with a lack of support at home. It is at school, however, that they get to experience and explore the wonderful world of education while in a safe and loving environment. Their love of learning is inspiring!
My Project
My students will use Scholastic News magazines to explore the world around them through rich, non-fiction text. Most of these students will not get the chance to travel in their lifetime. Scholastic News magazines will introduce the students to the world outside of Philadelphia where they reside. Students will also get the opportunity to use online instructional materials such as videos, skills games, and printable skills activities.
Donations to this project will help my students build the confidence to participate in class and the encouragement they need to love learning.
This project will greatly improve my classroom by providing the learning tools necessary for my students to succeed academically.
