My Students
Reading at grade level is a daily challenge. Currently the Federal Government spends 2 billion dollars trying to address this each year. However, by 8th grade, 1 in 4 students do not read at grade level. Students need a better option than illiteracy, they need a solution.
At my school the kindergarten grade level team is determined to focus on Mastery by Grade 3.
One of our school districts strategic goals is to assure that at least 19 out of 20 students entering kindergarten in 2013 will meet or exceed standards in all core subjects by the end of Grade 3.
Although the students benefiting from this grant are not those kindergarten students that entered in 2013, our team is dedicated to making certain that from here on out, this bold strategic goal applies to all current and future incoming kindergarten students.
My Project
We have adopted new reading curriculum, which aligns with the strong work that we have begun in writing over the past two years. The Reading and Writing Project’s work reflects some core beliefs and values. One of the most important of these is that raising the level of literacy for children is an act of social justice. John Dewey wrote: “I believe that education is the fundamental method of social progress and reform.” The work we as teachers are engaging in aims to prepare kids for any reading and writing task they will face or set themselves, to turn them into life-long, confident readers and writers who display agency and independence in their future endeavors.
I want to provide relevant leveled texts that students can access during independent and partner reading during reader’s workshop each day at school. Lakeshore Learning Center provides level-appropriate books designed to get students excited about reading which are perfect for differentiated instruction.
As students continue to see themselves as readers and writers and set goals as they take on a growth mindset, they can use strategies they have learned so far this year surrounding Learn About the World books (non-fiction) and Storybook Reading (fiction) to strive towards the goal of Mastery by Grade 3.
Thank you for your consideration as we work together as a community to increase Mastery by Grade 3 and provide level-appropriate books to get our youngest students excited about reading.
