My job as a teacher is to give my students the tools they need to make progress on their educational goals. My students are in a self-contained middle school special education classroom for students with a variety of disabilities that make it difficult for them to access their grade level academics.
Each child has an individual education plan to help them make progress on goals in academics, social skills, communication and functional life skills.
About one-third of my students speak English as a second language and every student works significantly below their grade level in all academic areas. My students are very hard workers and try their best to grow and learn in every subject. They are full of boundless energy, curiosity and incredible potential. I would love to give them all access to engaging, high-interest reading materials about current events in order to enrich their educational experience and help them maximize their learning.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of Scholastic News. Each student will receive a weekly newspaper to read about current and upcoming events. They will also receive a subscription to Science Spin, which will provide them with a monthly science magazine to read and learn about a range of high-interest science topics. I am also requesting a class set of TIME for Kids magazines, which will provide students with non-fiction articles based on current events. Students will be able to actively read and engage in learning activities based around current events, science, and other topics presented to them in a magazine format.
This project is important because my students require hands-on interactive ways of learning about current events.
Not only will we receive the classroom subscription, but each will come with an online component that will allow me to project the articles, images, and activities in an interactive format to keep the students engaged and learning.
