My students need 7 sets of books on their level to read independently, organized bins to place books in when visiting the class library, a white board, and dry erase markers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Children are made readers on the laps of their parents."- Emilie Buchwald. As well as in the classroom! Watching struggling readers grow into children who are fluent, and enjoy picking up a book is my goal every year. The challenge I face is having a class library that allows this to occur.
Every year my class is filled with students on different reading levels.
I have students who are ELLs (English Language Learners) as well as students who have disabilities. My school tries to support me as much as possible with books to engage the different learning styles and levels of each student, however much of the material is outdated and my students do not enjoy reading them. They do not visit the public library, so many of them just do not read.
My Project
The 7 sets of books on their level, organized bins, and other materials that I am requesting will allow my students to read without the struggle. These books will be high interest, but on levels on which they can read independently. It will keep my students engaged and hopefully they will begin to enjoy reading, and not look at it as a chore. I have also asked for book bins to place these books in to keep the new materials organized. This is also important for the students when they are looking for books that suit them.
I have also asked for dry erase material. My students use small white boards at their desks to engage in group work, and the markers constantly run out, so having a class set will be beneficial. I also asked for a large dry erase board so I can place it in an area where all my students can see.
Without reading and constant communication with peers, students will not have the proper tools to venture out into the real world.
Donating to this project will allow me to show my students how to learn to love reading and carry that with them through all of their school years to come!
