My Students
My third graders consist of a lively bunch of students who come from a culturally diverse population. Each student brings a wide range of valuable skills, experiences and learning styles. I enjoy their excitement and curiosity about learning. My students are from an urban public school and are valuable members that create a caring community with their peers, teachers and staff.
I think what makes my students so special is the fact that they enjoy writing and reading daily.
Since they were in kindergarten, my students have been exposed to daily Reading and Writing Workshop where they spent about an hour learning a skill or strategy and then having an opportunity to practice that skill independently.
My Project
I love having a classroom library full of books and other readable materials and my students love having a variety of texts.
For this project, I would like to offer my students access to a variety of non-fiction magazines that focus on current events and high interest topics.
Initially, a donation of non-fiction magazine subscriptions will be used during Reading Workshop. During Reading Workshop, students will spend 30-40 minutes engaged in independent reading followed by 20 minutes of writing about what they have read - focusing on reading comprehension skills taught in class. The students can also use the non-fiction texts during Writing Workshop as reference materials during the units that focus on writing how-to books and mini-research expository texts.
