This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What would your students say if you told them that they had to purchase their pencils, pens and paper from the classroom store? Well, that's exactly what I intend to do. As students earn play money, they will have to learn to budget for their needs (classroom supplies) and wants (prizes).
My students are new comers from another country and struggling readers that come to the learning center on a daily basis to receive extra support in language development and reading.
Although they struggle to read independently, they enjoy read-alouds and shared readings where they are able to engage in rich discussions that lead towards making connection, partner sharing, retelling stories or sharing newly learned knowledge with their peers through different collaborative groupings.
My Project
Last semester I began a journalism program that focused on building and developing the four domains of language--reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students went on a field trip to interview police officers and published their first Roaring News Newspaper. The program was so successful and has drawn positive attention from school, that I will be starting a journalism club where students can apply to work for our journalism club as photographers, video recorder, journalists etc. This semester we will focus on interviewing the teachers; they will take notes on their note pads. The information gathered will used to type the articles; then, we will print them using the HP laserjet. My students will continue developing the four domains of language while also learning real life financial literacy responsibility. I will create time cards where students will sign in and out; based on their position and hours worked, I will pay them weekly.
Help me teach my students two valuable academic experiences--language development and financial literacy--through our journalism club.
While developing their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, they will also learn real life experience as they earn money, make spending and money saving decisions.
