My Students
The world is a vast, amazing place. An amazing place that needs creative problem solvers with determination, persistence and confidence. Each child in my room knows that mistakes are valuable, attitude is everything, and we are all growing every day.
My students are true gems, including some diamonds in the rough.
However, my school strives to help all students find a way to shine. My school is a public school in a high poverty area, with a very diverse student population. There are roughly 25 languages spoken in the homes of the students. Approximately 80% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of my students come from families struggling to meet even basic needs. Yet my students eagerly come in every day, ready for new discoveries and new challenges. Because of the positive attitudes towards learning that are being fostered here, my students fight hard to excel. I want to continue to encourage these learners every step of the way with as many experiences and opportunities as possible.
My Project
Enjoying and learning from a magazine is a mostly unknown concept to my students. Many don't have any books or magazines at home. Their eyes literally light up when they begin to explore the amazing pictures and articles Scholastic News offers. They don't even realize they are learning! The engaging lessons that accompany them will help my students improve their nonfiction reading skills, as well as study fascinating science, social studies, and current events topics. These subject areas are often the first to be cut in school districts, yet they are sometimes the only areas in which some students thrive. These magazines and their activities would also provide my students with something tangible that can go home with them, to be shared with their families as well. It's like giving them a gift every time!
All students deserve to be given the best quality materials to learn with and explore.
Unfortunately, our district simply cannot afford learning materials like Scholastic News at this time. My students have just as much drive to learn and discover as those in other wealthier areas, maybe even more. Please help us bridge that gap, and open their minds to the world every week with Scholastic News.
