it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first-graders are ready for another amazing year! First-graders have a passion and desire for learning that is insatiable. They are incredibly motivated and surprise me each year with how active they can be in their own learning.
One of my favorite experiences each year is taking a step back, as my students become more independent and involved in their education, and observing how brilliant their brains are.
By the middle of the year, I have witnessed first graders running their own learning groups and partnerships during reading, writing, and math instruction. Each and every one of them is so capable and wonderful of so much greatness. I am so lucky that I get to play a role in their development as learners.
My students are from Boyle Heights in Los Angeles, California. Our school is a Title I school with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-rate lunch. The school is rich in culture, community, love, and support. Unfortunately, sometimes it is hard to get my hands on all the materials and resources I would like for my classroom and students.
My Project
Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines provide students with engaging nonfiction texts in the content areas of current events, social studies, science, and math. The magazines are full of colorful photos that support comprehension. The texts develop reading skills and include practice tests that can help increase test-taking confidence and achievement scores on standardized tests. Scholastic News provides a complete yearlong program that helps students build a wide variety of essential reading, language arts, and writing skills.
By increasing motivation, reinforcing skills, and encouraging students to become active participants in their reading development, these magazines can help close the achievement gap between high-performing and low-performing, minority, and disadvantaged children.
Research shows that many disadvantaged children lack developmentally appropriate reading materials in their homes. These magazines will provide them with informative, relevant print that they can keep and continue to read over and over to increase their reading skills.
I want my students to know and experience that reading can not only be fun, but very informative. They are so excited each and every time their magazines are delivered and are always so eager to start exploring these texts. There is just something so exciting and special about a subscription. I have definitely noticed an increase in reading motivation, engagement, and stamina with Scholastic magazines!
