This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The Silicon Valley is rich with technology but our school lacks the funding to afford any.
My students live in a high poverty area, but have taken it upon themselves to sign up for a technology focused program at our school.
This is a new program offered at our school, and just like every other school, we have been hit hard by a lack of educational funding. This is causing our new technology program to start with a lack of technology! My students are motivated and eager but are still using out-dated overheads and transparencies, hardly the technology program they were hoping for. I want to be able to have the resources that these wonderful students deserve!
My Project
We need a document camera compatible with a Mac so we can model lessons and show any number of visuals and other presentations. Have you ever noticed the amount of paper wasted from making needless copies? My students are learning this first-hand, especially in our technology class. With this a document camera, I will be able to project actual computer components with our LCD projector instead of trying to photocopy them and then try to explain a black lined transparency.
Also, if students want to see examples of how other students did their work, they have to wait to turn in an assignment to me, and then I have to go to the photocopier and make transparencies/copies. This process takes at least a day (or a rushed lunch period), and by then, the learning opportunity is difficult to earn back. Our photocopier melts transparencies so we need the document camera. But that's another problem. The document camera will also help us meet National Educational Technology Standards 1abs.
A document camera paired with our LCD projector will provide endless hours of learning opportunities to my students.
Hundreds of trees will also be saved because I will no longer be running off copies of directions or examples of work. I will also be able to focus more on developing creative lessons with our new technology instead of being in the copy room.
