This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
New York City Public School 56 Queens is a Title I school with a student body of approximately 70% eligible for free lunch. Our school had the good fortune to be rewired for Internet connectivity and our students create web sites and will be composing their own digital music with GarageBand -- thanks to Donors Choose. We have already experienced the trauma of losing student work and know just how important it is to back up student files. The new challenge is to make copies of what are very large files on an external hard drive with enough capacity to store the material. Because our students share machines mobility is important which would make an external hard drive a wonderful tool for continuity of instruction. Students would no longer have to wait to access a particular machine to develop their projects.
On occasion students have announced that the file "seems to have disappeared" and it's hard to determine who is more traumatized: the teacher or the student! Enter (hopefully): the external hard drives to save the day (not to mention time and effort expended developing the projects). Music files, animations, graphics, photographs -- all those can require quite a bit of space on a hard drive, so an external one for backup so that we can later burn a CD to protect the work in progress, would be a tremendous contribution to any classroom. We're hoping Donors Choose agrees and that this proposal is worthy of funding.
Donors Choose has been spectacular in its support of enhancing classroom learning because of the trust it places in teachers to determine classroom needs. For that, we thank you. You have it right!
