One of our school’s greatest assets is our diversity. Our students and their families bring a wide range of experiences and perspectives into the classroom. We serve students from a wide range of socioeconomic, ethnic, and national backgrounds. However, the majority of our students come from low income families. A large gap in socioeconomic status becomes an issue when we leave our classrooms and open instruction up to the larger world as we head outside the building and outside the city.
We know we can’t equalize every part of our students’ lives, but this trip is one way we work to make sure all our students get to learn and grow in new ways.
While some students can afford the full cost of our trip, many cannot, and some aren’t able to contribute anything at all so we rely heavily on fundraising and donations. We do as much as possible to make sure our students have the same opportunities as any other child in the Commonwealth.
While some students can afford the full cost of our Nature's Classroom trip, many cannot contribute and rely on fundraising and donations.
My Project
We aim to help our students become explorers, thinkers, and scientists as they experience outdoor learning at Nature’s Classroom. The students will solve problems, work collaboratively, and work to bond as a grade. They will have the opportunity to further develop a range of social and emotional skills which will serve them well as they progress through middle school and into high school and even college and their future careers.
Visiting Nature’s Classroom will expose students to a new educational setting, deepen their sense of community, and foster their self-confidence.
In addition, it also serves as a wonderful way for students and teachers to continue building strong relationships as we are able to interact in a new and exciting setting. Finally, it is a way for all our students to feel a sense of belonging because every child is able to attend.
