This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My English Language Learner students have an enthusiasm for learning English, and they want to support their parents in learning as well!
Our school has over 200 EL students who represent 18 different home languages other than English, and they want to not only succeed, but further their parent's language learning as well.
Last school year, I had many students and parents ask for resources in the community to help them increase their English proficiency. In looking for resources, I determined that creating our own targeted resources for our school would be the best path to make access easier for students and families.
By giving families English language resources in our own school, they will have quick access to books they can read with their children and any additional tutoring or classes we could provide them to support their English learning. Doing so would help proficiency overall in both students and parents and build relationships that will carry on within school and in the community.
My Project
The English learning materials will provide resources for students and their families to extend their English learning at home and with the support of our school. Many of my students and parents last year asked for community resources to help build their English proficiency, and what better way than to provide access at school, where they have relationships with staff members who can provide support to their learning! I have included bilingual books to read at home, as well as vocabulary and visual resources to use in lessons at school or at home.
Students and parents can learn in tandem and encourage one another in their learning!
These resources will not only support our students as they increase their language, but also the parents who are very motivated to improve their English skills as well.
