Extended Learning in Logical Thinking and Literacy

My Project

My 9th grade English students have an array of strengths, challenges, and backgrounds. Three of my five classes are co-taught (with a credentialed Special Education teacher) due to the high number of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPS) that address their learning challenges and unique needs. As a result, my lessons are highly scaffolded and differentiated to meet each student's needs. Still, students sometimes end up finishing at different times. While I offer extension activities, I also want to offer another option for those students who find themselves with extra class time: fun, engaging games that develop literacy and logical thinking skills.

Games like Scattergories, Scrabble, and Bananagrams support literacy development, while chess and Rush Hour develop logical thinking skills which mirror those used in argumentative writing.

Research has shown that "gamifying" content supports student engagement and learning when used in addition to quality curriculum and teaching - especially for students learning English as a second language (one example here: https://ethicallingua.org/25409190/article/view/568#:~:text=This%20study%20shows%20that%20the,English%20in%20class).

The binders and sheet protectors will help me to support freshmen who struggle with organization and whose families may struggle to afford basic organizational resources. One example is a guide to writing a formal e-mail. I pass out this resource to each student during the first week of school, and they put it in a sheet protector and keep it all year. They use it as needed when crafting formal e-mails to teachers and others.

Lastly, the tower fan will help to keep the office attached to my room cool; the air conditioning does not connect to that room. My co-teachers and I use that room as a separate setting for students who need more help. I want that space to be comfortable, and it's currently too hot.
