My classes consist of students who are of lower-income and live in neighborhoods where gang violence has become a norm for most. This violence has created obstacles that no child should have to endure on a daily bases.
When my students are with me, I am their "Keeper." My role as an educator is to see that they are in an environment where they feel safe, academically challenged, and socially competent to reach their fullest potential.
I encourage them to be persistent, use all available resources, and never give up on their dreams.
My Project
I want my students to have reading material that they can enjoy reading. Scope Magazine does just that! It will expose my students to a variety of genres that present exciting and youth-centered stories. As readers, they will be able to make connections between their classroom reader and the stories within the magazine.
Scope Magazine supports the skills and strategies that will be taught through-out the year.
The leveled language arts activities that accompany the Scope stories will reinforce the focused standard for the week. These activities are excellent for building ELA skills and strategies in small and whole group settings.
