Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach PreK in a public charter school. Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds however, most students are from families who struggle economically. My students say whatever comes to their minds. They are also constantly mimicking and picking up new vocabulary. Sometimes that's really wonderful and then sometimes I have to make a phone call. Confessing to a parent their student now knows how to use a substitute " not nice" word grammatical correct. Example A: from one of my PreK students struggling with his coat "this zipper won't flipping zip". My point is that language in this stage of development is crucial. Communication or language is also one of the biggest coping skills a child can have. I want to give my students every possible chance at fostering a life long love of reading/writing through a multitude of language experiences. As well as give them tools for coping with whatever life has in store for them. We have to remember that these students are coming into school under a pandemic. Covid-19 changed everything. My students most of them have never been anywhere but home. So coping tools and language skills are more important then ever.
My Project
COVID-19 changed everything for students. The students I'm seeing are lacking in certain life experiences. They've been at home most of their lives because of the pandemic. Some have never been anywhere without their guardian. They are coming into a school setting that now requires them to have routines. I can't begin to imagine how big of a change that is for them. They need social skills, language skills and maybe most importantly they need coping skills. Their world has been rocked they haven't even been able to participate in library readings. Most storytimes now are online. I want my students to have a multitude of language and social emotional experiences. Some may find that doing yoga helps them connect to the lessons. For other's it could be painting along to a read aloud. Whatever their learning style may be I want to give them a chance to figure it out.
