My Students
My students come from all over the world to start anew in New York City. I work at one of the few remaining large public high schools in New York City. The school educates over 2000 students. Twenty five percent of the student body are designated as English as a New Language (ENL) and approximately 15% are Students with Disabilities (SWD). We educate all.
The schools model is 'Learning by Doing'.
As both a science and arts educator, I firmly believe in that statement. Regardless of which class I am teaching, my students are doing. They are working with their hands in conjunction with their minds, in order to create something; they are not stagnantly reading. They are applying what they learn. The skills they master can be applied to real life situations and challenges. Beyond that, they proudly display their works on social media and proclaim "I made that" or "I did that, be jealous" providing increased self-confidence.
My Project
Sewing is a dying art. Home Economic classes are things of the past. However, skills learned in such subjects help create life skills for stable adults. My class and our projects help bring back the best of those subjects. Boys and girls both learn how to hand and machine sew. They will take a design from their own imaginations and actually fit them to a human model. They will apply mathematics to pattern making and alterations while interacting on a personal level with others. Students will not only be thinking and writing but actually doing; the motto of our school.
By donating to my project you will be helping individuals and a school community, not just a class.
The materials will be used in class and in tandem with the schools fall play and spring musical. In order properly create garments for theses, thread is needed for construction. The iron and ironing boards will be used for pressing. Pressing is a critical part of sewing; it allows for control of the fabric during construction and better fit. Currently my costuming class is being held in a band room, the tables would be used for creating level spaces for the students to cut and sew their garments. Overall, I want to be able to provide my students with the tools they need to make a garment that they are proud of.
Additionally, the modeling club and dance shows will benefit from these materials as our class can design, create, and alter outfits for these group's large productions.
