This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

With many subjects to learn in school, my bright and creative students often feel overwhelmed and disconnected. The pandemic has definitely increased those feelings for many of them. One of my biggest goals is to find ways to give them a sense of ownership for their learning by harnessing their perspectives, ideas, and lived experiences.

To quote a parent at our Open House this year, "It is so important to have our kids see themselves in the books they are reading and the work they're doing!" Creative projects like posters, 3-d models, and zines, books with main characters from their own cultures and communities - these things can make all the difference in making a teenager feel like there's a reason to participate.

I want to help them use those connections to boost their learning and succeed in meeting their goals.
