I am a first-year kindergarten teacher in a school with very little art supplies. Art is important for children, but there are few supplies. I want these kids to be able to use art to express themselves, use their creativity, and explore things around them. "Creativity is intelligence having fun."
My students come from a variety of backgrounds.
The school is 87% free and reduced lunch eligible. These children do not get many opportunities to experience art materials and explore what they can do with paint, oil pastels, paper, cardboard, or clay! Kids at this school have limited means to be able to explore the world around them, especially with art.
My Project
My students need watercolors, oil pastels, and clay! I want to be able to incorporate and integrate art in all of the subjects that I teach: literacy, math, science, and social studies. With these materials, I plan on doing just that. I also am going to have a specific set of time set aside during the week for art lessons since we do not have an actual art teacher. Our first exploration in art was with watercolors based on what we have learned and experienced the first couple weeks of school and they loved it!
I think that this project will make a difference because the time we spend in art will give them another means to express themselves other than speaking or writing.
It will also give them a way to explore and show what they have been learning in the other content areas of the classroom. I think it will show them how important and useful art can be in their lives!
