My Students

My students are energetic and amazing kids from the south side of Chicago. Most of the kids I teach are faced with challenges in their lives, both at home and at school. As their music teacher, I hope to help my students by encouraging them to express themselves in positive ways.

My students love music class because they get a chance to share a creative experience with their peers.

Our school is running on a bare bones budget, and funding for the arts is just not there. Your donation would help to provide a quality musical experience for deserving students.

My Project

Hi there. I am blessed to teach a group of dedicated middle school music students. We have some VERY talented drummers within the group, and they have expressed interest in starting a drumline.

Many of my most talented music students struggle greatly in structured environments, and have emotional issues.

I know that participation in a drumline would teach my students communication skills beyond what a typical classroom experience would. They would work collaboratively with others to create something they would be proud of, while making friends and expressing their emotions in the process.

We need a bass drum in order to start a drum line, which will practice during 7th and 8th grade music class and after school. Bass drum is the "heartbeat" of the ensemble. We can get away with buckets as snares, but having a real bass drum is essential to our success.

Middle school is a hard time for anyone, let alone kids in low-income situations with few opportunities. Imagine how proud everyone will be to see the kids playing their hearts out at a basketball game or community function. Imagine how proud the parents of the bass drum player would be to see their child confidently leading the group. Drumline would offer students who might not excel academically or athletically something to live for.
