Expose, Develop and Display Potential

My 9th grade English students need a digital camera with printer dock, computer speakers, a printer, a DVD player, a projection screen, 3 audio books, including "To Kill a Mockingbird", a "To Kill a Mockingbird" poster and teacher's guides for 2 books.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. B.'s classroom raised $885

Two hours every day! It's either two times more wearing or two times better. I believe it's the latter. I am a Teach for America corps member teaching in Missouri. My school has seen a dramatic shift in its demographics and the school's funding has reflected this change. This is my second year teaching Freshmen English and I have the pleasure of seeing my students almost two hours everyday, allowing for some dramatic gains to be made in only a year.

Because I will literally have twice as much time with my students over the next year I truly have the challenge of keeping their attention hooked and their minds invested in our classes goals: improved reading and writing. As a literature teacher I'm a purist when it comes to the importance of reading, but I'm also a realist in recognizing that the generation currently in the education system thrives on visual and auditory stimulation. I literally sweat each day--no air conditioning, but I won't ask for that to be donated--striving to make literature alive for them.

I have a LCD projector, but no screen to shine it on. My personal computer isn't loud enough for the class to hear even if I did find alternative funding. Students will also be represented on the Wall of Fame, as their beaming smiles will be displayed upon our classroom's wall with the assistance of the camera and printer. Our district follows a less than ideal curriculum that I must adhere to, but hearing an eloquent reader on CD seems to make a world of difference. As for the printer, honestly, mine was stolen last year. I've learned, though, and it won't happen again.

As I think about my year, I honestly get almost as excited as when the Steelers won the Super Bowl. Not so much for the experiences I'll have, but the potential that I'll be able to see flourish before my eyes. When I look into faces I see potential that a society has systematically kept at bay. Through my experience I've realized that education is the key to success for my students. My students are just starting high school. I get them young and have the opportunity to invest them in something worth working hard for: improved ability in reading and writing. The education gap in America is a literacy gap and technology is by no means the solution, but properly used it helps to meet kids where they're at so that they can be dusted off and shine as bright as their smiles. You can help me do that--and display them clearly for the world to see.
