My Students

Imagine figuring the solution to the grain of rice story by hand. Now use your calculator to check the answer. There are many ways to approach a story problem and calculators make the arithmetic accessible for all. Now students can explore the mathematics behind the problems.

My students are from a variety of backgrounds but they lack supplies and home support.

Many of these students have exceeded their parents' education levels and need additional help at school to succeed. We are a Title I school which puts at least half of our families on free or reduced lunch. The economy makes it harder for parents to be at home and available to their children since they often hold down multiple jobs. My students and their families are dedicated but super challenged. Any tool I can introduce them to that will simplify their lives at some point is important to me.

My Project

The ability top spend more time thinking of creative ways to approach a problem is what the new national common core for mathematics is all about. Calculators will enable my students to think outside the box rather than spending all their time computing answers. Quick tests and checks will encourage more diverse thinking. We need 25 calculators.

Teaching students to think, to use technology, and to have a willingness to try will make them much more successful in future professional situations.

Calculators are one way to boost their mathematics success and help them reach higher levels of critical thinking.
