My students need these items every year. These are the items that are consumable and always run in short supply in my classroom. We use markers, pens and wipes like they're going out of style!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach high school students in an urban setting, less than 2 miles from Downtown Los Angeles. My students are primarily first and second generation immigrants who have an impressive drive to succeed. I teach in a school where they are encouraged to attend college, and as such, teaching students new media literacy is just as important as teaching content and study skills. For many of my students, they will be the first in their family to graduate high school. Over 98% of our student population are part of the free and reduced lunch program.
My students are strong-willed, persevering and have a desire to succeed, but unfortunately, due to their family's socioeconomic status, do not have the same access to materials as most high schoolers.
That is primarily why we focus on teaching 21st-Century skills at school, and why funding this project is imperative for their success.
My Project
Every year, there are certain items in my classroom that are worth their weight in gold...if you can find them. They are: Expo markers, writing implements, wipes (got to keep the flu bugs away!), highlighters and post-it notes. Helping us by donating these materials will actually save me from having to buy these items out of my pocket.
My students come from low socio-economic backgrounds, and many of them come to school without pens, pencils and highlighters, and your donation will allow me to have these items on hand to lend to the students.
These items will be used with love and care all year.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
