Explosive Science!

Help me give my students hydrogen peroxide, zinc, hydrochloric acid, and potassium iodide to do some explosive demonstrations.

My Project

Chemistry is my favorite topic to teach! My students love all of the labs and demos for this unit. I've never met a middle school student who doesn't love experiments where we light things on fire or blow things up. I've requested materials that we can use to do a chemical reaction demo combining mossy zinc and hydrochloric acid. This reaction produces Hydrogen and zinc chloride. We can use this demo to teach balancing equations, conservation of mass, and chemical reactions.

I will capture the Hydrogen in a balloon, and light it with a match (from a safe distance of course) for an unforgettable explosion.

I've also requested 35% hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide. These two materials will react with dish soap to make some pretty impressive elephant toothpaste. My students make a safer version of this in small groups, but using stronger hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide greatly increase the "wow factor" when I do this experiment as a demonstration.

I've also requested a few USB C chargers that hopefully aren't explosive, but are desperately needed because so many students need to charge their Chromebooks during class.

We don't have the money in our budget to buy these supplies, but I believe these items will contribute greatly to the experience of my middle school students. These explosive experiments excite my students and inspire them to learn more about science.
